Cafe Conversations

Collaboration

Academia is at the centre of developing trends. However, there is a gap between universities and industry that needs to be bridged by academics and IT professionals as individuals and as a community of practitioners. This requires a sustained programme of networking and developing specific areas of interest associated with this academic-industry channel. The industry is continually broadening and the knowledge domain increasingly complex so the focus must be more direct in terms of the target audience rather than trying to target a broad audience.

The format of the breakfast forum is a conversation modelled on the concept of Cafe Conversations - visit http://theworldcafe.com .

Dinner with John Zachman in Cape Town

Dinner with John Zachman

When Andre de la Harpe asked me if I would be interested in having dinner with John Zachman, it wasn't a question. Even if I had the option of having a discussion with a) Nelson Mandela b) Barak Obama or c) the Dalai Lama, I would still have opted to have dinner with John Zachman. And I may sound like a giddy teenager at a concert but please bear with me as I provi

Leadership: Understand the Needs of the Business, Not Simply Technical Brilliance.

A couple of weeks ago I talked about the Thirteen Qualities of Leadership which skimmed over many of the qualities required for good leadership. Today I want to expand on just one of those qualities our ability to focus on the need of the business, and not simply demonstrating technical brilliance. Irrespective of your technical background [...]

Your IT Department – To be disposed of? Or a Necessary Change Agent?

I have heard recently several comments that an IT department should be dismantled as a department and assigned to every other part of the corporation. If there were only a single source suggesting this then I would name and shame them here, but sadly there are many who persist with this errant vision. I also [...]

CEO Clinic: Why do we need Social Media?

Since making the move into the Social Media space I have spoken with many business leaders about leveraging the power of the medium. One CEO recently asked me “what is in it for me, I suppose that means more expenditure?” I understood his thinking as every business has to know the value of every investment [...]

Will Social Media Change how we Get/View Advertisements?

This is an interesting question that was raised the other day on LinkedIn. My own view is that advertisements will continue to be a part of the landscape on Web 1.0 and on Social Media sites well into the future. If used correctly adverts can target the right market sector more precisely on this channel [...]

Google Wave – A First Look

Having just completed an exciting meeting with my business partners on Saturday afternoon. I found an interesting email glaring at me from my inbox, “Your invitation to preview Google Wave“. My first thought was here was another hoax, no with a little investigation I do discover that this one is for real. You can imagine what [...]
